Dad's Army

2016
95 Mins

The classic British TV sitcom gets a second big screen outing with Toby Jones  neatly stepping into the polished brogues of Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring.  The Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon deal with a visiting female journalist (Catherine Zeta-Jones) doubling as a German spy. D-Day is looming and the rag-tag defenders are required to play a key role as World War II draws to its conclusion. Sound casting (Bill Nighy is laconically perfect as Wilson) and a tweaking of the script to make it slightly more risque result in a solid, enjoyable show.

Director: Oliver Parker

Starring: Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Courtenay, Mark Gatiss, Sarah Lancashire, Blake Harrison

Genres: Comedy

Charlie Sheen and Valeria Golino are back to lob more gag-grenades in a Rambo-inspired sequel to the jet-propelled 1991 spoof Hot Shots! Some military men have been captured in Iraq but the first rescue mission wasn't too successful. So it's up to Sheen's gung-ho commando Topper Harley to get the men who went in to get the men. Steven Spielberg spoofs it up with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in this epic war comedy. Written by Back To The Future team Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, it follows a multitude of characters as 1941 Los Angeles is thrown into hysteria by rumours of a Japanese invasion. It's complete chaos but great fun to see the serious likes of Ned Beatty, Warren Oates, Christopher Lee, and Toshiro Mifune rubbing shoulders with John Candy and the Blues Brothers.

The comedy engineers behind Airplane! dismantle Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman to gut-bustingly funny effect. Charlie Sheen stars as the jittery navy pilot who's drafted in to lead a suicide mission. But as usual, spoof veteran Lloyd Bridges commands laughs from every line while Valeria Golino throws herself into her romantic role with impressively straight-faced abandon. Takes your breath away.

Trouble is, the talismanic brick has been housed in Westminster Abbey under watchful English eyes since 1296.
