Spy

2015
115 Mins

When a CIA super-agent (Jude Law) is fatally compromised while tracking down a nuclear device in Europe, humble desk analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is sent on her first undercover mission to keep tabs on the arms dealers. Unfortunately, her efforts to blend in merely leave her colleagues shaken and the villains' suspicions stirred. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig reteams with the larger-than-life McCarthy and chief baddie Rose Byrne for a bitchy, barmy and surprisingly bloody spy spoof that sees Jason Statham on scene-stealing form as a gung-ho British agent working to his own hare-brained agenda.

Director: Paul Feig

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Jason Statham, Allison Janney, Bobby Cannavale, Miranda Hart

Charlie Sheen and Valeria Golino are back to lob more gag-grenades in a Rambo-inspired sequel to the jet-propelled 1991 spoof Hot Shots! Some military men have been captured in Iraq but the first rescue mission wasn't too successful. So it's up to Sheen's gung-ho commando Topper Harley to get the men who went in to get the men. Confused? President Lloyd Bridges certainly is.

Spoof lightning strikes for the third time with Leslie Nielsen back as Lt Frank Drebin, persuaded to come out of retirement when his best gal Jane (Priscilla Presley) pulls the plug on their relationship. His mission: to go undercover and foil a terrorist attack on the Oscars ceremony. The double-entendres alone make it float above number two. Fred Ward, Raquel Welsh and the late Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith line up alongside usual cast suspects OJ Simpson and George Kennedy.

The comedy engineers behind Airplane! dismantle Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman to gut-bustingly funny effect. Charlie Sheen stars as the jittery navy pilot who's drafted in to lead a suicide mission. But as usual, spoof veteran Lloyd Bridges commands laughs from every line while Valeria Golino throws herself into her romantic role with impressively straight-faced abandon. Takes your breath away.

Hair-raising car chases mix with comedy mayhem in this sequel starring Burt Reynolds as the fast-driving bootlegger, still running rings round the law in America's Deep South. This time Burt Reynolds' wily Bandit is hired to take a heavily pregnant elephant from Miami to Texas in just 24 hours. But, of course, his old rival Sheriff Buford T Justice (Jackie Gleason) is out to get him. Stay put for the amusing outtakes at the end of the movie.

Make sure your laughing gear is fully operational before attempting to watch this ground-breaking spoof of 1970s air disaster movies. Robert Hays is the traumatised pilot who teams up with ex-girlfriend/stewardess Julie Hagerty to land a jumbo when the crew kark it mid-flight. Not easy with a cabin full of eccentrics and puddled Lloyd Bridges in the control tower. Brothers David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams (aka the ZAZ team) keep the visual and verbal gags flying in the parody to which all others aspire. Surely it can't be one of the funniest films of all time? Yes it can... and don't call us Shirley.
