Devoted dad Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) has rejected society and is bringing up his six children in the mountain wilderness of America's Pacific Northwest. However, when his bipolar wife commits suicide while receiving treatment, Ben and the kids take a road trip to the funeral in New Mexico that brutally introduces them into an alien world where their values of honesty, decency and self-help don't always apply. Writer/director Matt Ross's powerfully poignant story celebrates the unconventional but proves to be all too well aware of its pitfalls.
