Cruise is Cole Trickle, a hotshot driver whose biggest obstacle on the circuit is his ego. Luckily, he's got pit legends Robert Duvall and Randy Quaid to keep him on track and neurosurgeon Nicole Kidman (! ) to bring down the testosterone level when it hits danger point. The romance between Cruise and Kidman was to blossom on-screen and off, while notorious producer Don Simpson defied death long enough to enjoy his role as one of Cole's competitors.
