Gus Van Sant's much-loved, Oscar-winning drama stars Matt Damon as a troubled young maths genius and Robin Williams as the therapist who helps him deal with his inner demons while grieving for his own dead wife. With Affleck as the best friend and a sparky Minnie Driver as the love interest, it's a well-crafted character piece. Williams was duly crowned Best Supporting Actor, yet while Affleck and Damon also picked up a gong apiece for Best Original Screenplay it was later alleged by legendary Butch Cassidy screenwriter William Goldman that it was all his work.
