This complex, thoughtful and deeply heartfelt father-daughter drama comes from Debra Granik, co-writer and director of the brilliant Winter's Bone. Ben Foster plays Will, a troubled former marine who has rejected conventional life and society in favour of the isolated, off-the-grid existence that he shares with 13-year-old Tom (terrific Kiwi newcomer Thomasin McKenzie). They have a tiny camp tucked away in the lush green of the Oregon woods, foraging for food and only venturing into town when absolutely necessary - propane doesn't grow on trees. The threat of being discovered, though, is constant, and when one tiny slip alerts the authorities the peace and privacy they've known for so long are shattered. For Will returning to the world of people - the world of soulless bureaucracy, constant intrusion and noise - is out of the question, but what about Tom?
