Sally Hawkins puts heart and soul into this acclaimed biopic of much-loved Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis. Life begins for downtrodden, stammering, neurotic Maudie when she gets the job as live-in housemaid for short-fused, taciturn Nova Scotian fishmonger Everett (Ethan Hawke). It's a strange and initially abusive relationship but the odd couple reach an equilibrium where Maud is allowed to paint (after she's completed her chores); an occupation that soon attracts the attention of rich New York collectors... and eventually Richard Nixon.
