About the track

Winding through Belgium’s Ardennes Forest, the historic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is the longest on the F1 calendar — and one of the most unforgiving. Drivers have only 44 laps around the 7km loop to make their move and fight for their position down fast straights and technical corners.

Spa’s real challenge, however, is the weather. The conditions for this rural track are infamously unpredictable, holding the record among F1 Grands Prix for the most wet sessions. It’s not unusual for one straight to be completely dry and the next to be slippery, turning tyre strategy into a serious gamble.

But rain or shine, motorsport fans always pack the grandstands for one of the most popular races on the F1 calendar.

This year marks the 72nd Belgian Grand Prix and a century of motorsport racing at Spa. Victories, rivalries, upsets, and heartbreak have all unfolded here in that time, and this year will be no different.

The Belgian Grand Prix is Formula 1 racing at its most daunting, earning its nickname: the Beast of the Ardennes. Follow all the action exclusively live on Sky Sports on NOW from Friday 17 July.
