Childhood sweethearts Beja and Antônio plan to marry as soon as he finishes his schooling abroad. But while he's away, Beja catches the attention of Mota, one of the King's magistrates, who upends her plans for the future.

After she's dragged from Araxá to Paracatu, Beja desperately dodges Mota's advances while seeking refuge in her budding friendship with Severina. In Rio, Antônio finds himself narrowly escaping serious trouble with help from his childhood friend João.

As Beja continues her efforts to escape, Mota grows more determined to keep her in Paracatu. After being made aware of Beja's whereabouts, Antônio sets out to rescue his fiancée while Maria lands a perfect opportunity to place Angélica in Antônio's path.

As Beja finally resigns herself to the life in front of her, she manages to work the system thanks to her etiquette lessons. Meanwhile, Antônio is injured in his attempt to rescue Beja, and Maria inches closer to making her plan a reality.
