Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, his new deputy Jim Chee, and Officer Manuelito try to solve the murder of an old man and a young girl by connecting the present to the past.

Leaphorn and Chee interview the witness to the motel murders, while Manuelito investigates a new crime.

When a retired policeman is murdered during a Civil War reenactment, the dead man's three mistresses and a 35-year long feud with his brother make things complicated.

Leaphorn suspects all of the crimes on the reservation are related, and there's a big break in the case. Meanwhile, Manuelito makes a discovery of her own.

With a major suspect in custody, Leaphorn discovers there is more to this crime than he ever imagined. Chee must choose between his career and his people.
